It’s council clean up day tomorrow (or “hard rubbish” as they call it in Melbourne). As a result, the nature strips ’round here a full of all sorts of interesting things, from dolly prams to CRT TVs.
And just around the corner from our place, we found a new, bigger bunny hutch for Pepper.

It’s still two stories, but quite a bit wider. Best of all, the roof hinges upwards to make cleaning easier, and the front screen hinges outward to make feeding easier.

Wing’s out there right now rigging it up with our rabbit run.

Again I heard a possum in the roof tonight. I settled with the thought that we’d wait till the ceiling is being put in before we do anything. My mind changed as soon as I heard movement in the extended area when I went to get a drink in the kitchen.

I put on my camping head lamp, switched it on, light-footed to the backdoor and opened it in one swift move. It didn’t take much looking before I saw a possum on one of the ceiling beams, its big bushy black tail wrapped around a piece of wood. I walked under it and saw the brush-tailed possum frozen. I made kissing noises, nothing. I shuffled my feet loudly, nothing.

After getting Kt to have a look at it, I returned to find that it had moved closer to the newly primed double-backdoor. I pushed the door open and called to it. This went on for about 5 minutes before it came down onto the floor. It slowly walked towards me, looking as thought it was walking around my legs to the exit. I shuffled away to give it a more direct route to the exit, but it got startled and got back up on one of the wall supports.

After consulting with Kt, I decided to try using fruit to tempt it out of our house. Aha!  There was half a banana in the fruit bowl collecting fruit flies, so that was an easy decision to make. Turns out this possum was rather partial to bananas. I went back out to the extension, showed it the banana, laid it near the opened backdoor, stepped back and squatted down. It took a minute or two to stare at the banana before it climbed down onto the floor, circled the study before turning back towards the banana. Cautiously it approached the fruit, and cautiously it ate the fruit. I stood up walked towards it, hoping it would run out the door with its fruity snack, but it darted out in a hurry, leaving the biten banana behind. I threw the banana out in reward and jammed the doors close. I also made sure no windows were open.

Hopefully that’ll keep it away until the door locks are installed and the ceilings put in. So far no other possum sound has been heard. Fingers crossed.

gah! when will this chaos end? fisrt they moved our cat-flap. then a huge digger came around making noise, and brought an even bigger dog with it. but then at least they turned most of the front and back yard into a big litter tray for us. and then today they filled all those good new holes with grey goo. onestly, what’s a cat to do?

what else?

News just in. While Pepper The Bunny’s residence was being relocated to the back of the yard, away from the demolition and building work, she escaped out of human custody and enjoyed a good ten minutes or so of freedom. Witnesses reportedly saw three hooman guards give chase to no avail. Later they tried to tempt the furry fugitive with food without success. Eventually the long-eared leaper got tired and was captured by a decisive scruff grab, before being returned swiftly behind bars.

Despite the daring escape, facility spoke-person denies there is any need to review current security measures.

Opal the Siamese fighting fish

For the past month or so Opal (aka Opie) the Siamese fighting fish had been fighting an illness which impeded his ability to feed himself. He kept missing the worms and ended up head butting them. When he managed to get one in his mouth, it seemed difficult for him to swallow it. After some TLC with constant water change and salt mix and antibiotic drops, he made a small come back and started eating a little. In the last few days, he deteriorated again and had been resting against the rock at the bottom of the tank for the past few days, not eating any of the food given to him.

Today Opal lost his fight. Hamble dug a hole near the last fighting fish “Strawberry”, and Opal was laid to rest.

Your time with us gave us lots of joy. We will miss you Opie. May you rest in peace.

Pepper got out again. We have no idea how long she was snacking on Loquat leaves and freshly-mown Dandelion stalks before Polendino spotted her bobtail whizzing past the back door.

It was a lot quicker to get her back into her hutch today, but then we were handicapped by darkness and rain last time.

The weekend before last, Boo spotted a huge Blue-tongue lizard on the path beyond the back deck. It was a good three inches across its back. I haven’t seen one that big in years. The two boy-cats were giving it a wide berth, making me wonder whether they’d already had an encounter with it. Having been disturbed by our stomping out to the clothesline, he slowly slithered back to his home under the deck. At Polendino’s suggestion, we named him “Butters”.

Yesterday we found that we had a smaller, younger cousin living in the front yard. This time we managed to get a photo. And this time it was the girl-cat giving the lizard a wide berth. Meet Kenny…

Yesterday I got a NEW Siamese Fighting Fish. (Strawberry was mine so I was not happy when he died.) The new one is called Opal. He is very pretty with big fins. He is blue/green/red. And he’s very active. I feed him these weird “bloodworm” things. You break off a square (probably the one you used yesterday) from the big block and waggle it round until 6 or 7 worms fall off, then BANG! 5 seconds later they’re all gone! I have this REALLY REALLY BRIGHT multicoloured gravel in there and a pot plant which is a little too big for the tank.

The Friday the 13th of June, Strawberry the Siamese fighting fish was euthanised.  He had white fungal growth all over, including his eyes.  He was buried next to the possum on a rainy night of Sunday 15th of June.  May he rest in peace.

Bunny Mansion

Even though Pepper has been living in a two storey hutch, we had been thinking about incorporating the fenced run to the hutch, so that it can go for a run, or a hop, around whenever she pleases (yes, the vet has confirmed that Pepper is a girl bunny).

So last weekend we bought an extra roll of wire fencing, shaped the previously separate rabbit run to a rectangle, added a roof, and attached it to one side of the hutch, which we’ve cut open to allow for access.  Voila!  We’ve increase the bunny’s real estate four times.

Pepper is happy, very happy.
